If you’re in the market for call tracking, make sure you understand exactly what it is you are buying. Many service providers will lure you in with cheap pricing, but there’s a hitch, sometimes several. These marketers will use the Internet and the seemingly “easy” sign up for an account process to pull a classic bait and switch.

The problem begins with the fact that they don’t reveal what toll free number you are going to receive until they’ve secured your credit information and you’re committed to an account. Once they have it, you’ll likely be assigned a sub-par number with a non-800 prefix such as 866, 877 or 888. Why does that matter?

Because anything short of an 800 prefix will generate misdials; in fact, studies show they can number in the thousands. Oh, you can buy an 800 prefix toll free number, it just costs more than the introductory rates advertised. Furthermore, to get a really good number such as a repeater that has the same digits which has been proven to deliver 20 to 70 percent more inbound leads, you’ll pay even more.

Then there is the call tracking itself. Some providers are unable to give you the most basic reporting filters, such as unique callers, because such fundamental metrics are not built into their software.

The moral: buyer beware! Know exactly what kind of number and what kind of call tracking features you are getting.
