This article walks you through the steps for creating new custom dimensions in Google Analytics 4, as part of the process of creating events to pass Dial800 call data into Google.
Create Your Custom Dimensions
To properly pass data from Dial800 to GA4, you will need to create custom dimensions to tag and display Dial800’s caller data. When the data is pulled from Dial800 and matched to the fields in GA4, your call tracking data will show up in Google for a more comprehensive event.
To go to a specific step in this process, click on the link below:

Please Note: Before beginning this process, please make sure you have already gone through the steps for “Collect Your Data Stream Measurement ID” and “Add a New API Secret to Your Google Analytics 4 Account” in the article Setting Up DNI Integrations with Google Analytics 4.

Please Note: GA4 limits you to a total of 50 custom dimensions. If you are also using these to pass data from another program, you may be limited on how many call data fields you can pass through or you may need to make some edits to allow for the Dial800 custom dimensions.
Create Your New Custom Dimensions
- Log into your Google Analytics account.
- Click on the Admin gear in the bottom of the left-hand menu.
- In the Data Display section, click on Custom Definitions. This will bring up a list of your custom definitions. Click the Create Custom Dimension button to add a new dimension.
- This will open a new window where you can enter the new custom dimension details. Copy and paste the data from the table above to create the new Dial800 custom dimensions you need:
- Copy the name from the Dimension Name column above into the Dimension Name field in GA4.
- Set your new custom dimension as an Event in the Scope dropdown menu in GA4.
- Copy the description from the Description column above into the Description field in GA4.
- Copy the ID from the Parameter ID column above into the Event Parameter field in GA4.
- When you are done entering the new custom dimension information, click Save.
Check Your Events in GA4 for New Dimension Data
- Log into your Google Analytics account.
- Click on Reports in the left-hand menu.
- Open the Engagement menu and click on Events.
- Click on the Add Filter + button.
- This will open a Build Filter menu where you can select up for give conditions to filter your GA4 event data. You will find your new Dial800 custom dimensions in the Custom section of the menu.
- Select a custom dimension from the dropdown menu. For this example, we will look at Dial800 Campaign.
- Choose your match type from the dropdown menu – this allows you to select exactly which data you want to see. Options include Exactly Matches, Contains, Begins With, and more.
- If you select Exactly Matches, you will then have a list of available dimension values to choose from. Otherwise, you will have a text box to enter in the term you want to use to filter the GA4 data.
- Click + Add New Condition to continue adding more filters (up to five), otherwise click Apply. Your GA4 event data will now be filtered by the custom dimensions you selected.
- To remove a filter, click the X on the filter name.
